The Wellington Gold Awards 2013 was nothing short of dramatic. The black tie event fell on the evening of one of the biggest storms Wellington has seen in recent years. Still, even with the rumbling of the TSB arena roof, we were glad to be there as Outward Bound were the proud recipients of the ‘Team Gold’ award.
As we got ready for the dinner (the Wellington OB office is conveniently located in the same location as the event, the TSB arena) and the lights flickered – we joked about how unfortunate it would be if there was a black out during the dinner, turns out that was an accurate premonition! Nothing short of 30 minutes into the glamorous gathering (and unfortunately just as the first award recipient was speaking) the roof rattled loudly and all power went out. This really allowed the ‘high-tech’ theme to shine, as the neon costumes and fibre optic table centre pieces were suddenly a key source of light. Thanks to some very sharp organisational skills - the generators kicked in immediately and the evening was in full swing again with power shortly after.
The Outward Bound table consisted of staff from both Wellington and Anakiwa, providing a great opportunity for us to catch up over the ‘North Island’ side of the Sounds. We were up against tough competition, with Xero and FINNZ both nominated in the same category. As we were announced – we were proud to send Shane Wratt (Courses for Business Account Manager) up to receive the award (our CEO unfortunately back up in Auckland after having a flight turn around due to turbulent weather). Complete with ‘geek-tech’ stripy, yellow visor sunglasses propped up on his head, he delivered a heartfelt acceptance speech, acknowledging the hard work that Outward Bound puts in to managing one team, across two locations.
We’re really proud to receive the 'Team Gold' award as we feel it sums us up perfectly as an organisation.
For over 50 years, teamwork has been at the heart of Outward Bound Trust of New Zealand. It’s fundamental to our shared values and how we operate. Operationally, we live this as one team across two locations. Philosophically, it’s how each student experiences the benefits of Outward Bound. And last but not least, it’s how we achieve our goal of Better People, Better Communities, Better World.
