Thinking of Attending
So what's an Outward Bound course really like?
Generally you can expect to be stretched and that might be physically, mentally or emotional. It is very real - at times you may get dirty, tired and wet – at the same time you may feel refreshed, exhilarated and triumphant. We keep you well fed with healthy food. It is the challenge and overcoming the perceived impossible as a group of strangers that makes a course special. Through being with people 24/7, talking about what is really going on for you, and hearing what’s really going on with them, you get a better appreciation of yourself, others and how you deal with the world. See course information for the details.
What are your instructors like?
Our instructors are integral to safety. We select only the best in the business - they have a great combination of skill, experience and ability with people. Our instructors have a rigorous six month training and induction programme, on top of their existing experience. All our courses are assigned at least two instructors.
What if the course I want to enrol on is showing waitlist or full?
Have a look at the course you want to enrol on and check whether you can waitlist. If you can, this is one way of hopefully getting on your preferred course. If you have a course you can attend, please apply for it and waitlist for the course you would like to attend. Waitlist Terms and Conditions.
What is the age restriction?
Our courses specify the ages of people who can participate. There is no upper age limit for those attending a course as long as medical criteria are met.
What activities will I do?
All activities involve situations where there are real consequences. Our highly skilled instructors will deliver the course, which will include sailing, kayaking, high ropes, rock climbing, solo experience, tramping, and physical training. You don’t need previous outdoors experience to participate on our courses. Read more about our course activities.
Can I go with friends?
Outward Bound is your opportunity to try new things and meet new people. People who know each other can be on the same course but we ensure they are in different watches (groups) during the programme. This gives every person the chance to make a fresh start without people who know you expecting you to behave a certain way... it's a chance to simply be you.
