Women in Leadership - Outward Bound

Women in Leadership

For current and aspiring female leaders Duration 5 days

Our Women in Leadership course is an adaptation of our Professional course, tailored to help current or aspiring female leaders increase their awareness of who they are, what they value and how they can extend their impact within organisations.

On top of building your personal courage and confidence, you'll increase your understanding of your own perceived limitations and learn strategies to break through these perceptions. You'll also learn to identify your core strengths and ways to apply these in a leadership role, all within a safe and supportive learning environment alongside other like minded female leaders.

I honestly think I am living potential I previously didn’t believe I had. I am open with others, listen more, know how to extend my influence and I regularly step into areas that are a challenge for me.

Jennifer, Kiwibank

Programme

OB Pro will put you in real situations with real consequences. You'll take on a series of experiential challenges, using the bush, mountains and waterways of the Marlborough Sounds as your classroom.  You'll work through situations while tramping, camping, at sea and in the water, and during height activities, that will all challenge you physically, mentally and emotionally. These outdoor activities are integrated with workshop sessions led by our expert facilitators who will help you maximise the impact of your learnings and assist you in embedding these skills back in your workplace.

True leadership is built from the inside out and although the Outward Bound activities will be similar to other courses involving sailing, the solo experience, scaling rock faces and jumping off jetties, the focus will definitely be on building mettle, developing self awareness and creating a supportive peer network, says course facilitator, Tania Gough.

Outcomes

Research has proven that men and women are equally capable of effective leadership but take a different approach to promoting and maximising their unique strengths and talents. This high impact professional development programme will enable emerging and established female leaders to increase their awareness of who they are, what they value and how they can extend their impact within organisations.

In preparation for the programme, you will complete a TMI profiling tool online that will identify your preferred working style. As part of this pre-course work, your manager or supervisor is asked to provide feedback on you, along with selected peers.

The outcomes of these tools are presented to participants during workshop sessions where they will learn about their own working style and others, and witness these styles come to life during the activities and challenges. Through integrating the same unique learning outcomes we’ve delivered since 1962 with experts in professional development, you'll emerge with resilience, adaptability, confidence and self awareness.

FAQs

Some of our commonly asked questions answered...

Like our Professional courses, Women in Leadership includes workshops delivered by a trained facilitator and TMI profiling analysis. The Women in Leadership course focuses specifically on supporting students to reach professional goals with a focus on honing their own personal leadership style. Our Discovery and Discovery Masters courses follow our traditional Outward Bound model with a compact 8 day course that focuses more on personal development: building confidence, realising a personal goal, better communication skills, how to work in a team and revitilising body and mind. Both courses use the beautiful outdoors as the classroom and both courses offer a range of activities including sailing, high ropes, rock climbing, river kayaking, tramping and navigation.

The minimum fitness requirement is to be able to run 3km in under 25 minutes. You do not have to be an experienced runner and will be supported by your peers and instructors during all activities. Running is only a small part of the programme.

Check out our guide to getting fit for Outward Bound.

You need to be able to swim and/or paddle in deep water and be comfortable with putting your head under water. During water based activities, you will be wearing a lifejacket.

No. All participants are required to meet the medical and physical requirements for the course, but there is no specific age limit.

Please note - this is for Professional, Women in Leadership and Wellbeing courses only.

Activities on the Professional courses are simply the vehicle for learning, not the overall focus of the programme. In fact one of the most important elements of your programme is a series of facilitated review sessions. Participants take time to reflect on their performance and process the days events, guided by their facilitator. With this, and the use of peer feedback, participants are able to assimilate their learning and behaviours back to the workplace.
