The Compass course is designed for the younger professional. It is an 8 day option for developing fundamental skills and attitudes required to excel in workplace teams.
Personal confidence and effective skills in communicating with others are key outcomes of Compass. Our focus is to grow self-awareness, empathy, relationship savvy and confidence in a team setting.
The workshop modules, team activities and debriefing all assist to create a very engaging and practical course for the 20-30 year old employee.
Unlike most professional development programmes, Outward Bound does not provide a full course schedule. This 'unknown' element creates a fair degree of uncertainty and excitement (for some). It ensures people remain focused on the task and develops skills in being adaptable and managing emotion. These are key skills for building personal resilience and confidence.
Prior to the course, we establish the direct managers expectations of the person attending. We also record the participants objectives for the course. This information is used by our instructors to tailor the programme to the needs of the individuals.
On the Compass course, students will participate in workshops, outdoor challenges and activity debriefing sessions. Instructors present content modules covering: Decision making, self-talk, taking risks, communication styles, reflective listening, problem solving, feedback and team communication. Outdoor activities include: rock climbing, sailing, ropes course, kayaking, navigation and solo experience.
Early mornings, invigorating dips, insightful classroom modules, personal challenge, amazing team adventures and...life-changing experiences! Perfect for interns, graduates, apprentices and young professionals.
Many organisations set up annual scholarships for employees to attend Outward Bound. Often these are a very successful way to publically reward and recognise great employees and provide excellent training and development for the lucky recipient.
We make it easier for you by providing a couple of downloadable and editable examples of scholarship application forms. We hope you find these useful in getting your scholarship set up!

Amanda White - South Waikato District Council
"A big part of my current role involves taking workshops with farmers to teach them about feed budgeting. With the increased confidence and better communications skills that I have acquired, I'm now better able to tackle the workshops I run."

"During the course, we were encouraged to step outside our comfort zones and build confidence through the challenges we faced. We also learnt a lot about different personality types and how to work effectively with any type of person. As a result, I now feel a lot more confident about dealing with other people and have learnt a number of useful strategies that help in this regard."
Tim Aldridge - Reserve Bank of New Zealand
