Navigator Leadership Course Feedback

"In terms of the learning, both personal and for my work environment, I felt this was by far the most effective leadership course I have attended. All the other courses I have completed have been classroom based and focus on the theory or models. While we may have done role-plays, often everyone involved knew the situation and the desired outcome, so it was never a true/honest/challenging situation. Then when returning to work, it is hard to bridge the gap between the theory and the reality of trying to put it into practice. At Outward Bound there is a huge focus on experiential learning, and I certainly found this an effective teaching style for me. Basically a theory or model was introduced in a workshop session, then we were sent off on our ‘next adventure’ which would test our styles and behaviours in a real, challenging environment. The follow up workshop sessions allowed us to reflect on the behaviours exhibited during the activity and relate it to the theory we had discussed previously. On returning to work, it has been much easier to relate work situations to the real-life activities and experiences at Outward Bound and already my team and I are benefiting from some of the ideas I came back with as well as my renewed energy and focus.
