Aoraki Bound

Aoraki Bound is a 20-day cultural and personal journey, developed collaboratively by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and Outward Bound for all New Zealanders.  After spending 8 days at Outward Bound, you will journey from Anakiwa to the Arahura, finishing at the base of Aoraki (Mount Cook).  This journey course builds leadership, cultural awareness and personal development.

Our courses are designed to be mentally, emotionally, and physically challenging. Activities occur in all weather conditions and can include off-track tramping, camping outside, whitewater and surf kayaking, running, sailing, swimming, rock climbing and high-ropes. Aoraki Bound includes cultural components of te reo Māori, haka, waiata, Ngāi Tahu migration and history, pōwhiri and more.

I credit Aoraki Bound with being the catalyst for change in my life and my reconnection to my taha Māori, to walk in the footsteps of my tīpuna was truly empowering and gave me the ability to forge a new path of my own.

Some of our commonly asked questions answered...

Aoraki Bound is open to all New Zealanders aged 20 years and over who have a passion for Ngāi Tahutanga.

Please note that final acceptance on to a course is subject to Outward Bound receiving and approving the medical declaration form and Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu receiving full payment of the course fee six weeks prior to course commencement.

We understand it can be difficult to balance your commitments with a course. Try involving and engaging your employer in your Outward Bound programme. Explain what you'll get out of it and how your effectiveness at work should also improve.

The fitter you are, the more you will enjoy it! You must be able to comfortably run 3km in under 25 minutes, plus complete a full day's physical activity.

There are varying fitness requirements for these courses:

Discovery/Professional/Leaps and Bounds: Fast walk or run 3km in under 25 minutes

Aspire: Walk a minimum of 2kms and five flights of stairs (walking sticks ok).
