Kia ora koutou,

Under Alert level 2, the Outward Bound team is continuing to prepare to reopen the school for courses starting on Wed 29 July. Bookings are open for all courses commencing from that date.

We are working alongside Education Outdoors New Zealand, Recreation Aotearoa and other outdoor educators to develop a plan to operate safely under the different alert level restrictions. We hope to be able to confirm and share with you our plans for operating under alert levels 1 and 2 very soon.

In the meantime, our enrolments team can be contacted if you have any booking or general enquiries. Under Alert Level 2 our team are rostered to work from both home and the office. For this reason our 0800 number is not manned and we ask you please to lodge all your enquires via our contact form

We very much appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to develop our response plans at the school.

Nga mihi nui,

Outward Bound

Covid-19 Update for April bookings @ Wed 18 March 2020:

Kia ora koutou,

This information is applicable to students enrolled on our April courses and the current COVID-19 developments.

As it stands today the Ministry of Health has confirmed 20 cases in NZ. There is an imminent roll out of testing kits to see how widespread the virus is and if there is community transmission.  Until we have further information in this space, our April courses will go ahead as planned.

Nonetheless the situation is changing rapidly, and we understand some of you could be affected by transport cancellations, have concerns around travel to Picton or about your course.

If your travel is cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic:

If you are unable to find alternative travel arrangements, please contact our team to reschedule your course booking. Any COVID-19 related cancellations can be deferred up to 18 months from course start date and bookings can be changed up to 3 times, 40 days prior to course start. Please refer to our full cancellation and refund policy listed later in this email.

If you are concerned about health and wellbeing while travelling to Picton:

We ask all our students to please take upmost precaution when travelling on planes, buses or ferries to Picton. Please read the following WHO guidelines for travelling in public places:

https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public.

What we are doing to keep our students safe at the school:

It is our utmost priority to keep our students, staff and wider communities safe during this time and we have made changes to our programme to lower risk.

Nonetheless taking part in an Outward Bound course does not support genuine physical-distancing due to the very nature of our course delivery. We do ask that parents and students consider this and understand that ultimately it is a personal choice as to whether you and/or your teen attends or not.

At the school we have made adjustments to our onsite delivery including: no hongi or handshaking during the powhiri, no direct sharing of food, minimizing external visitors to the school, more stringent cleaning processes and availability of hand sanitiser at all activity sites; on boats and trucks, in the watch houses and bathrooms.

We are reviewing our processes daily.

Ministry of Health control measures:

We are following the current pandemic border control measures that were issued over the weekend. This requires all future enrolled students who are returning to or entering New Zealand from overseas to self-isolate for 14 days prior to a course commencing. Please refer to the Ministry of Health instructions below:

For COVID-19 health advice and information, contact the Healthline team (for free) on 0800 358 5453 or +64 9 358 5453 for international SIMS.

In addition, if you meet either of the criteria below prior to your course, please contact us immediately:

  • You and/or your child have been in contact with someone who has been in a COVID-19 hotspot and has flu-like symptoms.
  • You have been in close proximity with someone who has a confirmed case of COVID-19.

Our Cancellation and Refund policy:
Should you and/or your child’s course be cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we will offer an unconditional transfer of your booking to a later date, valid for 18 months from the original course start date. A maximum of 3 booking changes (up to 40 days before course start date) can be made in that time if your course is postponed due to COVID-19.

Please refer to our standard payment and refund policy for anything non COVID-19 related:

Full payment of the balance of the course fee, along with your medical form, is required eight weeks before the start date of the booked course.

  • Your full course fee may be transferred once only to another course date within 12 months of your original course and up to 40 days before your course start date. *Transfers are not applicable to scholarships provided by Outward Bound.
  • Your course fee, less your $749 deposit, is refundable up to 40 days before your course start date.
  • Deposits are non-refundable except for medical reasons, at which point a medical certificate is required for cancellation.
  • Students who do not show for their course start date are not eligible for a refund.

We understand this is a challenging time and do encourage you to call us if you have any questions on 0800 688 927.
