The School at Anakiwa

DSC01103

Established in 1962, Outward Bound still operates from its original location, Anakiwa, in the Marlborough Sounds.

The School

Anakiwa (near Picton) is regarded as the most perfectly situated Outward Bound school in the world. The natural timbered buildings merge gracefully into the curve of the bay and are backed by native bush. A long jetty stretches to where the school's small fleet of cutters are at anchor. The rock climbing wall is tucked behind the school and offers spectacular views across the Grove Arm.

The classrooms of the school are the native bush, mountains, rivers and seaways of the Marlborough Sounds.  Students can expect to traverse the Marlborough region tramping, sailing and kayaking while on a course.

2,000 students visit Outward Bound each year, with the school able to take 150 students at a time.  Outward Bound is divided into 10 watch houses that house 14 students during a course.
