Managing your period at
Outward Bound

If you’re a person who menstruates, there’s a chance you’ll get your period while on course. Outward Bound is designed to push you outside of your comfort zone, but menstruating while on your course shouldn’t be a source of stress. Whether you’re on a multiday tramp, sailing on the cutters, or kayaking down the rivers, we will always provide a safe and private space for you to manage your period while on course.

Ikura Manaakitia

In many cultures, menstruation is celebrated. For pre-colonial Māori, bleeding was an important monthly event, and its connections with whakapapa, history, creation stories and spirituality were openly discussed.

Ikura refers to a Māori name for menstruation, which connects traditional beliefs about the mana and tapu (sacredness) of a woman and menstrual blood. It comes from the Te Reo term Kurawaka, where Tāne made the first human. Manaakitia means to look after, care for, and show respect or kindness to. All students in a watch will be introduced to the ikura manaakitia and will be expected to show respect and support for their menstruating watchmates.

Being in nature can be a powerful and enjoyable experience, but it often means staying in remote places and away from the usual comforts of home, like toilets, running water and soap. This can make being on your period while in the outdoors tricky to manage, especially if you’re new to having a period or recreating outdoors.

Ikura Manaakitia Kete

Please bring your normal period products from home. If you get caught out, we will always have supplies available in the Ikura Manaakitia Kete (period kit). This kit accompanies every group on all activities.

What’s inside:
  • Ikura Manaakitia Kete: A waterproof dry bag to keep the supplies clean and dry in all weather.

  • Selection of Pads & Tampons: A variety of sizes.

  • Cleaning Cup: A dedicated cup to rinse and clean menstrual cups.

  • Sanitisation Supplies: Hand sanitiser and disposable gloves for good hygiene.

  • Disposal System: Paper and plastic bags for tidy disposal that follow Leave No Trace principles. Each student will carry out their own used period products in a plastic bag which can be disposed of when back at the school in Anakiwa.

Frequently Asked Questions

PRE-COURSE PLANNING

Pack enough for your full cycle, plus a little extra. The physical activity and change in environment can sometimes affect your flow, so it’s good to have a few spares.

Bring whatever you feel most comfortable using. Whether that is tampons, pads, menstrual cups, or period underwear, stick with what you know works for your body. We have systems in place to help you manage all types of period products while you're out in the bush, so you don’t need to change your routine just because you’re on course.

You are welcome to, but it isn't a requirement. We’ll provide plastic bags in our Ikura Manaakitia Kete (period kit) for discreet and easy disposal. However, if you prefer a more heavy-duty option, like a sealable plastic bag to keep things extra secure in your pack, it’s a great idea to bring a few of your own.

Absolutely. Your kaiako can give you tips on how to manage this while out in the wilderness.

That is completely fine. If you prefer using pads, we have ways to support you during all our activities. For things like swimming, we can chat with you on course on how to manage this.

ON COURSE LOGISTICS

Your kaiako will ensure you have the privacy and space you need. Whether we are in the bush or out on the water, we’ll make sure there is a safe, private, and discreet spot for you to get sorted. The Ikura Manaakitia Kete also contains everything you need to keep things clean and easy, so you can manage your period with confidence while you’re on the move.

The Ikura Manaakitia Kete is designed to be a one-stop-shop for managing your period in the wild. It accompanies your watch on every single activity and contains:

  • Extra Supplies: A range of spare pads and tampons in case you run short or your period starts unexpectedly.

  • Hygiene Essentials: Hand sanitizer and disposable gloves to keep things clean when you’re away from running water.

  • Discrete Disposal: Newspaper/paper bags and plastic bags for easy disposal (we follow 'Leave No Trace' principles, so we carry everything out with us).

  • Support & Comfort: Tips for managing cramps on the go and information on how to chat with your kaiako if you need extra support.

  • Menstrual Cup Rinser: A dedicated container for fresh water, making it easy to rinse and clean your cup hygienically while you're away from a tap.

  • Tip Sheet: A handy guide tucked inside the kit that walks you through exactly how to use everything, perfect for those moments when you just need a quick reminder of the best way to manage things in the bush.

We’ll go through the kete together as a group on Day 1 or 2, so you'll know exactly where everything is and how to use it.

We follow "Leave No Trace" principles, which means everything we take into the bush comes back out with us. You can source paper and plastic bags from the Ikura Manaakitia Kete to wrap and store your used products. Each student carries their own products out with them in their own bag, and you can dispose of them once you are back at the school in Anakiwa.

When you are away from the school, you typically won't have access to running water. This is why the Ikura Manaakitia Kete is stocked with hand sanitiser and gloves, allowing you to keep your hands clean and manage your period hygienically even in remote locations.

Yes, whether we are in the bush or out on the water, your kaiako will ensure you have a discreet and private spot to manage your period. We’re used to navigating this in all environments, so you’ll always have the time and space you need without feeling rushed or exposed.

We understand that everyone experiences their ikura differently. If you aren't feeling well enough to participate due to cramps or other symptoms, just have a chat with your kaiako. They will work with you to make a plan and provide the support you need

We respect all cultural practices and beliefs surrounding ikura. If you have cultural needs that mean you cannot enter the water or participate in certain activities while on your period, just let your kaiako know and they will work with you to make a plan.

Yes, many students find that wearing black leggings or dark swimwear works really well for a quick dunk in the water. Once you're finished and back on land or the boat, you'll have the time and privacy to change back into your preferred products.

We have the Ikura Manaakitia Kete ready to go on every activity, and your kaiako will make time and create a private space for you to get what you need and get sorted so you can carry on with the day’s activities.

EXTRA SUPPORT

Our enrolments team is always available to help. They are very experienced with these questions and can provide specific advice when needed.

Yes. Your instructors will discuss the ikura manaakitia kete with the entire group on day 1 or 2. Ikura Manaakitia means to wrap-around support, and we believe it is important for every student to understand how it works. Even for students who don't menstruate, we expect them to understand the kete so they can be supportive watchmates and help create an environment where everyone feels comfortable.

We understand that it can sometimes feel awkward to bring this up. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to your instructors, there will be plenty of female staff on site in Anakiwa who will be happy to chat. You can also contact our enrolments team before you arrive to discuss any concerns privately.

We know that ikura is a very personal experience. If there’s anything we haven't covered here, or if you just want to talk through your specific situation, please reach out. We’re here to make sure you feel confident and ready for your adventure.

You can reach our enrolments team at info@outwardbound.co.nz or 0800 688 927.
