News from Anakiwa

Outward Bound is extremely proud to have successfully delivered a pilot course in partnership with Te Ātiawa o Te Waka-a-Māui Trust - a 5-day culturally immersive experience named Te Toki o Awa.

The Ankiwa high ropes course is now over 23 years old and is one of the oldest systems of its type still being used in New Zealand. Thanks to the generosity of some dedicated supporters, the ropes course is being upgraded in 2024.

Outward Bound and iwi Te Ātiawa o Te Waka-a-Māui have re-signed a Memorandum of Understanding to continue working together to enhance Tikanga tuku iho of our organisations in Anakiwa and surrounding whenua.

OB Instructors Luke and Robbie planned to run 35km a day for 30 days, travelling form Bluff to Anakiwa and raise $10k for Outward Bound scholarships. The pair ended up travelling all the way to Cape Reinga!

On 24 September 2022, we had the pleasure of welcoming over 150 OB alumni from the past six decades back to the school in Anakiwa for our 60th-anniversary celebration.

Since the first Outward Bound School was established in Wales, over 40 schools have been established in more than 30 countries worldwide. Outward Bound New Zealand has run courses at Anakiwa since 1962, touching the lives of over 70,000 participants.

Hamish has been OB’s Health & Safety Manager in Anakiwa for the past 6 years. A total stalwart of the outdoor education industry, Hamish brings a massive amount of mana and experience to the role.

Ever wondered who makes sure there are extra socks, boots, thermals and raincoats available to students who don’t own those items? Or who is responsible for all the washing at OB? Or who came up with the ingenious idea for our poo plant?

We recently opened the much anticipated Levene Lodge staff accommodation! Named after our patron Sir David Levene and blessed by Te Ātiawa, the lodge has been sustainably designed to house our instructors and have a light footprint.
