Outward Bound Strengthens Ties with Department of Conservation

At Outward Bound,we believe that the community service part of our course helps you discover the benefits that come from restoring the natural environment and helping our local community.  Our "better people, better communities, better world" vision also ties in nicely with the volunteering ethos, which offers a tangible way to bring this vision to life.

With the school’s idyllic location at the foot of the Marlborough Sounds, we play an important part in the continued environmental health. It’s for this reason we have worked closely with the Department of Conservation (DOC) over the years on their environmental projects around Anakiwa.

Recently this has seen students breaking out a sweat and putting in the hard yards on the Mt Cawte Track, Blumine Island and the Queen Charlotte Walkway, to name just a few.

Our close relationship with DOC also helps to teach students about the importance of conservation and how their efforts positively affect the region’s wider ecosystem.

Recently we have moved the relationship from a regional partnership into a national one, with the aim of building stronger ties with DOC’s volunteering work throughout New Zealand. We both share a desire to link people, conservation and education together, promoting a future where the natural environment is valued and protected.

Recently we welcomed five DOC volunteers to Anakiwa, supported by DOC scholarships.

Our instructional staff have also benefited through additional training on environmental education, allowing them to deliver our environmental course objectives more effectively.

For DOC, an important aspect of this partnership is to encourage OB alumni to get involved in environmental volunteering when they return from Anakiwa.

If you are one of these Alumni who has returned home with a increased desire to keep New Zealand beautiful, check out DOC’s current volunteering projects here.
