MBS Compact is a lower physical impact course but it won’t stop you having plenty of adventures and you will experience the same mental/emotional and social challenges as any other Outward Bound course.

Activities could include sailing on the moana (sea), getting up high on the ropes course, exploring the ngahere (bush), service in the local community and camping. There will be early starts with physical training each day and sometimes a dip in the sea.

Education for sustainability will mean real experience and understanding of how to help look after the environment and how to take those skills home with you. We will explore how your values can contribute to a better society. After each activity, there will be reflection sessions.

Some of our commonly asked questions answered...

MBS Compact is designed for students who want to develop the skills an Outward Bound course offers but might have limited experience away from home or still be working on developing their fitness. They are however still motivated to work in a team and would benefit from being with people with a similar fitness level. They are interested in learning more about sustainability and developing skills to participate more in their community.

To get the most out of your course, you’ll be able to:

  • Run/walk 3km in 30 minutes.
  • Participate in a full day of physical activity
  • Hold a press up position for 30 seconds - see image below:

  • You won’t be expected to carry a heavy pack for long distances. Students will still need to carry a heavy pack for solo and at other times during the course
  • You can walk/run the 3km course in 30 mins (threshold is lower for our 21 day course)
  • You will 'go hard' for shorter bursts than on a 21 day course eg a one day tramp instead of a 3 day tramp
  • More flexibility to adapt activities to meet the group’s fitness levels
